Tragedy struck in southeast Houston Sunday evening when a 19-year-old woman, identified by her family as Makala Lacy, was fatally shot during a car club meetup event across from Grimes Park, as reported by Click2Houston. In the chaos of an unsanctioned gathering with vibrant car displays and revving engines, shots rang out near the 5100 block of Reed Road at roughly 6:45 p.m., drawing a sharp contrast to what was to expectedly be a peaceful Sunday evening.
Houston Police arrived on the chaotic scene to find Lacy in the median, her body riddled with bullet wounds. Officers fought to literally push their way through the crowd that had formed around the stricken young woman. Despite their best efforts, Lacy's injuries proved fatal, and she was declared dead before she could be rushed to a hospital for care. "She was a happy go lucky kid," Lacy's mother, Chandra Williams, heartbrokenly told Click2Houston. "That was my only girl. My baby."
The investigation into the shooting revealed that witnesses were able to quickly identify the alleged shooter and the vehicle he was driving, a black Ford Focus. Houston police officials, having established direct contact with the suspect, shared that he provided a statement over the phone and intended to turn himself in. However, according to Fox26Houston, as of the latest reports, he has not yet surrendered to the authorities, and his identity has not been released publicly.
"I just want to say to the coward that shot my baby...It will be justice for Makala," Williams stated, her voice a testament to a mother's unyielding grief. Lt. J.P. Horelica with the Houston Police Department noted that violence at these car club meetups is an exception, not the norm. "Usually there's no violence involved in them," Horelica told Click2Houston. "This is a rarity where there's actually a shooting at one of them."
Houston police implore anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as they continue their search for the suspect.
