An 87-year-old woman was punched in the face and robbed of her purse Saturday afternoon at the Bellaire Transit Center, according to police, before a bystander who witnessed the attack chased down the suspect and held him until officers arrived. The suspect, identified as Columbus Sargent, was taken into custody by METRO police and charged with aggravated robbery.
The attack happened at the transit center on Bellaire Boulevard at Rice, where police say a man punched the elderly woman in the face while attempting to steal her purse, according to ABC13 Houston. A witness named Osnely Valdes-Fiallo, who was riding the No. 49 bus at the time, saw the assault unfold and ran after the attacker, ultimately holding him until METRO police officers took custody of him.
Court records reviewed by the station list Sargent as homeless, and describe an extensive criminal history dating back more than 20 years that includes prior robbery, assault, and burglary offenses. Separately, Harris County Constable Precinct 4 records show Sargent was arrested in January 2023 after deputies found him with stolen credit cards and financial mail, leading to a felony charge of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information; Constable Mark Herman reported at the time that Sargent was booked into the Harris County Jail on $5,000 bond.
Why the Charge Is Aggravated Robbery
Because the victim is 87 years old, the case was filed as aggravated robbery rather than simple robbery. Under Texas Penal Code §29.03, robbing a victim who is 65 or older automatically elevates the offense to a first-degree felony, carrying a punishment range of 5 to 99 years or life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to legal guidance published by the Texas Constitution and Statutes. Texas law treats crimes against elderly victims as an aggravating factor that pushes what would otherwise be a second-degree felony into first-degree territory.
The victim's family told reporters Monday that she has since been released from the hospital. Details of her recovery and the extent of her injuries beyond the reported facial punch have not been made public.
A Transit Hub Under Multi-Agency Watch
The Bellaire Transit Center, located at 5100 Bellaire Boulevard at South Rice Avenue, connects six bus routes including the No. 49 line the witness was riding. The hub was established in 1986 through an agreement between the City of Bellaire and METRO, according to the Bellaire Civic Club. Bellaire Mayor Nathan Friedberg told residents in December 2023 that the city has no unilateral authority to relocate the center, though METRO has floated long-term plans to move the hub farther west.
METRO officers who responded are licensed peace officers certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, giving them full arrest authority across the transit agency's 1,285-square-mile service area — the same statutory power held by city and county police. That authority is why METRO police, not Bellaire officers, took custody of the suspect. The response also comes amid an $86 million multi-agency safety initiative METRO expanded in January, partnering with the Houston Police Department and Harris County's sheriff's and constables' offices to put more uniformed officers at transit centers and on buses under METRO Police Chief Ban Tien, a former Houston Police Department executive assistant chief who also served 32 years in the Army and Army Reserves, per Community Impact.
Part of a Wider Pattern of Attacks on Elderly Houstonians
This case follows a string of aggravated robbery and assault cases involving elderly victims across the Houston area in recent months, including a July case in which a man was charged with aggravated robbery after attacking a 76-year-old, detailed in Hoodline's earlier report, Houston Court Docs Detail Chaos As Robbery Suspect Accused Of Attacking 76-Year-Old Patient. Houston-area police were also searching in June for a suspect accused of robbing a 79-year-old at a Pearland parking lot ATM.
Transit safety more broadly has drawn scrutiny after a string of violent incidents on the METRO network, including a fatal shooting at the METRO Southeast Transit Center in July 2025 and a shooting aboard a METRO bus near Loop 610 in April. METRO maintains a dedicated reporting line, 713-224-COPS, along with onboard security cameras across its bus fleet that detectives regularly review during investigations. Riders who witness suspicious activity at transit centers or aboard buses are encouraged to use that line to alert transit police.
