A South Loop shooting has claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left another teen injured as gunfire erupted during a large gathering of young people on Saturday night, according to police statements. The deceased, identified as Jeremy Smith by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital following the incident which took place in a bank parking lot in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road near Canal Street, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Witnesses described the scene prior to the shooting, noting the significant crowd and police presence; businesses were reportedly warned about the gathering with one employee, Patrick Cahill of White Palace Grill, stating to ABC7 Chicago, "The Walgreens parking was filled with young people, anywhere from late teens to mid-20s." In the wake of the violence, Chicago police have detained one person and recovered a gun at the scene while charges have been filed against nine teens who attended the gathering for misdemeanors including disorderly conduct, reckless conduct, and assault also three curfew violations were issued.
Jeremy Smith, the teen who lost his life, was remembered as a "genuine" individual who was "no person to start fights" according to his stepfather, Hashim Bailey, in a statement obtained by The Chicago Sun-Times. The community held a vigil where friends and family released balloons and shared memories of Smith; his godmother, Raven Parker, imparting to the mourning teens, "Y’all gotta live your lives now because he can’t."
As city leaders grapple with the challenge of such violent gatherings, 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin emphasized to ABC7 Chicago, the need for respecting life, stating, "We have to get people to understand and respect life," and is looking to anti-violence strategies and healing initiatives as the city approaches the summer months, recognizing the necessity of providing young people with community activities to avoid the pull of downtown attractions and the potential for violence that has been a repeated concern for local officials.
