Tempe streets just became a bit safer as local police put the brakes on illegal street racers last weekend. In a major crackdown, FOX 10 Phoenix reports that fifteen people were arrested, while authorities seized 14 vehicles, and recovered two firearms. The action followed disturbing incidents, including a driver performing burnouts in a crowded parking lot before narrowly missing onlookers in a crash.
Tempe Police Department, which has been working closely with the Phoenix Police Department Street Racing Task Force, and the Department of Public Safety, are ramping up their efforts against this rising menace. "On any given night, dozens to hundreds of street racers take to Valley streets at high speeds," city officials said. "Sometimes they take over intersections." In the past year, 259 citations have been handed out in response to street racing activities, feeding into a growing concern over public safety.
Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy is determined to steer the community away from danger, leaning on collaboration and innovation for solutions. McCoy said, "As the Tempe Police Chief, I am committed to addressing the issue of street racing and its associated crimes. We will take proactive measures, collaborate with local agencies, and employ innovative strategies to effectively combat this dangerous activity," in a statement echoed by ABC 15.
Authorities are not just battling the racers themselves but also the aftermath of their recklessness. Police officials noted that around 50 vehicle crashes occurred in Tempe last year, resulting in 24 fatalities, with excessive speed playing a role in the majority of those tragedies. The crackdown, therefore, isn't merely about punishing thrill-seekers, but an urgent response to a lethal trend that has already claimed too many lives.
Tempe Police are now appealing to the public to join the effort by reporting any street racing incidents. Concerned citizens can contact Tempe Police at 480-350-8311 or Phoenix Police at 602-262-6151 to relay information that may help curb dangerous activities and assist in preventing future tragedies on the road. With community involvement and robust police action, Tempe hopes to signal the end of the road for illegal street racing.
