The district responded to apparent threats linked to a social media whistleblower, which sparked a grassroots campaign by the celebrity couple.
A student at Christiana Middle School faced suspension after submitting a drawing of Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo for a project, back in August 2023, which led to an uproar on social media. According to FOX 17, the controversy stemmed from a post suggesting the student was disciplined over the artwork, which in turn prompted Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo to publicly step in to offer support.
Amplifying the student's plight, Bunnie Xo shared her outrage on Facebook: "There is a little girl who did a project on J & I... she picked us because of all we've been thru & our resilience. For the project she drew a picture of us, THE SCHOOL SUSPENDED HER because of how she drew us! She's in middle school! How dare they shame a child like this." as reported by the American Songwriter.
The pair's initiative soon turned into a fundraiser. Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo began selling t-shirts showcasing the girl's drawing, and according to FOX 17, the merchandise quickly sold out. The proceeds were aimed to support the child caught in the center of this fiasco. Meanwhile, the school maintained the decision to suspend the student was not related to the drawing of the couple, as the mother of the girl mentioned in a social media video. Taste of Country reported that Bunnie Xo is continuing to back the family in various capacities after the incident.
As the story gained traction, Rutherford County Schools urged the celebrity couple to retract their statements about the suspension, initially denying the disciplinary action before getting in contact with the affected student and her family. The dispute highlights the sometimes complex interactions between social media influence, public response, and school administrative decisions in addressing these matters.
