The Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville is gearing up for an epic $19 million expansion aimed at enhancing the fan experience. The historic venue, a cornerstone of the city's cultural scene, is set to connect with a nearby building to offer more amenities, including extra bathrooms and a new bar. Becky Hancock, Executive Director, described the expansion as a transformative project for the theatre, which underwent a major renovation almost two decades ago.
Key to this upgrade is the acquisition of space in the adjacent Mechanics Bank Building on Gay Street, two doors down from the theatre. Despite being separated by two addresses, the rear of the bank building fronts the theatre directly, allowing for an easy connection. With an eye on practicality, the theatre officials are addressing long-standing issues such as crowded concession stands and bathrooms. According to an interview with Knox News, Hancock highlighted the demand for additional spaces due to the "interminable" lines during sold-out events.
The planned extension will add much-needed rehearsal and reception areas. Back in January 2019, the theatre's foundation laid the groundwork for this expansion by purchasing roughly 16,000 square feet within the Mechanics Bank Building. These improvements aim not only to relieve the pressure on existing facilities but also to provide dedicated spaces for smaller gatherings and performances that complement the main auditorium's schedule without any interference.
Complementing the traditional experience of the theater-goers, this project is fueled by $14 million in grants and donations, as per a report on AOL News. The remaining amount includes the $2.4 million invested in the bank building space. The idea is to create an environment for intimate performances and private events in a way that they won't step on the toes of the theatre's main happenings. It's about ensuring the theatre continues to thrive as Knoxville's "Grand Entertainment Palace," a title it has proudly held since its revival from 2003 to 2005.
While such challenges are not unique to the Tennessee Theatre, with similar venues like Chattanooga's Tivoli Theatre also embarking on expansion plans, the Knoxville spot's upgrade is vital to keep up with the ongoing demands of modern live entertainment. As reported by Knoxnews, the addition of more space for rehearsals is particularly crucial as "A lot of times a group ... they don't want to use the whole building, but they just need a place to rehearse. We don't really have that."
