Gunfire erupted near a Stockbridge shopping center Wednesday night, leaving three people injured and causing fear among the locals. Around 9 p.m., law enforcement was dispatched to the vicinity of a Dollar General on North Henry Boulevard, where officers discovered two victims inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Around the same time, across the street at a Popeyes, another individual was found bleeding, who police believe was connected to the same incident, according to Stockbridge Police Lt. Commander Ron Momon in a statement obtained by FOX 5.
Three firearms were retrieved at the scene, but it is yet to be established whether all were used in the incident, according to an Atlanta News First interview with Major Ron Momon. The nearby restaurant employees, having heard a dozen shots, found themselves taking cover behind a freezer, a detail which highlights the fear and confusion that gripped those close to the scene.
All three victims, described as young men by Major Momon, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Their conditions were serious but they were conscious and talking to paramedics en route to the hospital. The nature of their injuries varied, with one shot in the chest and two in the leg, illustrating the chaotic nature of the shooting. "We believe all three of the victims are connected somehow. We just don't know how they are connected," Lt. Commander Momon told FOX 5 Atlanta.
While a motive remains undisclosed, investigators spent the night documenting the crime scene, reviewing surveillance footage, and conducting witness interviews. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Stockbridge Police Department or anonymously relay tips to Crime Stoppers Atlanta. Police are seeking to piece together the events leading to the shooting. "We did recover three firearms. I don’t know if all three of them were involved, but we have a strong suspicion. So once we put all the pieces together we’ll be able to determine what actually took place out here," Major Momon explained in a discussion that Atlanta News First covered.
As the investigation unfolds, the community seeks answers amidst the lingering echoes of the dozen shots fired, hopeful for a swift resolution and return to safety.
