Chaos erupted on the streets of Lowell as not one but two car crashes demanded emergency attention on Friday. In an unsettling turn of events, a vehicle barreled into the corner of DEP Beauty Salon on Westford Street around 7:50 p.m., causing significant damage. "A car crashed into the corner of DEP beauty salon on Westford Street shortly before 8:00 p.m.," as reported by Boston 25 News. In a race against time, first responders were spotted trying to pry the vehicle from the wreckage of the building close to 9:00 p.m.
The driver, whose identity was yet disclosed, was rushed to the hospital after the accident. "A man who identified himself as the driver’s nephew said only his uncle was taken to the hospital," Boston 25 News reported. Eyewitnesses revealed the driver was conscious and speaking, despite being visibly distressed and injured. The salon owner is now faced with indeterminate closure and the daunting task of repairing the beauty shop, uncertain of the structural integrity of the building.
Meanwhile, Sathi Thach, who runs a salon across the street, spoke of hearing the crash and witnessing the urgent flicker of emergency lights unfold outside her storefront. "They driver was taken from the scene by ambulance," Thach recounted according to Lowell Sun. It remains unknown how serious the driver's injuries are, but immediate attention was provided as they were transported to Lowell General Hospital’s Saints Campus.
Further complicating the night's mayhem, another accident had occurred earlier when a car ended up on a home's front lawn on Hildreth Street, with the driver trapped inside. Rescuers from Dracut and Lowell had to extricate the beleaguered driver, who was ultimately taken to a Boston trauma center. The Lower Highlands neighborhood was left reeling from the back-to-back crashes as officials and utility workers responded to the salon's damage, with National Grid dispatched to terminate electricity to the compromised structure.
