Two men in Atlanta found themselves behind bars after their alleged carjacking escapade ended with police snaring them from a creek bed and a woodpile. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the incident unfolded on March 8 when a woman reported her car stolen on 8th Street NW. Reports from FOX 5 Atlanta indicate the vehicle was left idling before the suspects, identified as Elijah Simmons and Irunte Moreland, made their move.
The victim's quick thinking, utilizing her phone’s tracking capabilities, led officers directly to the stolen car located around Hall Street and Cedar Avenue. Attempts to fully embrace their flight, however, were short-lived as police launched a ground pursuit. Body cam footage released by the department then showcased officers, accompanied by a K-9, extensively searching until apprehending Moreland hidden under a pile of wood in a shed. Simmons was discovered trying to evade capture in a nearby creek bed.
Facing multiple charges including auto theft, obstruction, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Simmons also received an additional charge for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. In the body cam footage, a candid exchange took place as officers recognized Simmons. "How come the whole department knows you?" one officer can be heard asking, as detailed by WSB-TV Atlanta. Simmons' futile denial, "Y'all don't know me," was quickly rebutted with, "Oh, we know you," further illustrating the suspect’s notoriety.
Recovered at the scene was the victim’s car and one of the firearms attributed to Simmons. With the evidence piled as high as the wood that Moreland sought refuge under, both suspects now await their day in court to answer to the array of charges stacked against them.
