Amid allegations of mismanagement and policy violations, the United Auto Workers (UAW) has overhauled its leadership structure, reassigning Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock from supervising certain departments, as reported by Detroit Free Press. The decision comes after accusations from the UAW's compliance director stating that Mock had "repeatedly abused her authority and violated UAW policies."
According to The Detroit News, the United All Workers for Democracy Steering Committee – a caucus that endorsed Mock – revealed that the UAW's International Executive Board (IEB) voted to remove Mock from overseeing the Women’s Department and the Technical, Office, & Professional (TOP) Department. They alleged that Mock withheld routine expenditure approvals as leverage for IEB votes, and jeopardized union initiatives by not promptly approving funds for organizing campaigns, thus potentially wasting millions.
The shakeup was confirmed in a letter from UAW President Shawn Fain, which stated, "We have reorganized some departments and assignments, making updates and changes to our organizational chart as a union." In response to the allegations and her subsequent reassignment, Mock vehemently defended her actions in a written statement, "It saddens me that many do not understand my responsibilities as UAW secretary-treasurer, I must protect the sacred dues dollars that our members work so hard to earn and that they entrust to us to spend wisely in their best interest," she said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The recent events signal a trying period for the UAW, which is actively attempting to unionize foreign automaker companies, including Tesla, and secure worker rights. This leadership shakeup is viewed by some as a critical development, with Region 1 Director LaShawn English and Region 1A Director Laura Dickerson stepping into the roles vacated by Mock. "The move did not include departments assigned to her under the UAW Constitution, such as accounting," the UAW's activist group Unite All Workers for Democracy noted, highlighting the specifics of the reassignment, as reported by BNN Breaking.
