Coming off a historic bowl win, UTSA is throwing a hail mary with a massive $57 million investment aimed at beefing up its sports facilities. Lisa Campos, UTSA's vice president for intercollegiate athletics and director of athletics, has signaled that plans for state-of-the-art volleyball and basketball training facilities to be erected at the university's Northwest San Antonio campus. The Main Campus is all set to be home to these new digs, as well as upcoming enhancements at Park West, which already boasts a soccer field and a track-and-field stadium, according to an announcement detailed by the San Antonio Report.
While putting their best foot forward in campus development, UTSA doesn't drop the ball on engaging with local government. Campos shared the university's game plan to continue partnering with the City of San Antonio and Bexar County. They're also eyeing the monetization of real estate and the sale of university land to bolster future sports projects, stated in an interview obtained by the San Antonio Report. UTSA recently put up 24 acres of Park West land for sale, taking in offers until Feb. 20, with an evaluation of offers currently in progress.
The University of Texas Board of Regents have green-lit UTSA to discuss a sale or lease agreement with the City of San Antonio concerning their Institute of Texan Cultures property, potentially kicking off a downtown revitalization project. The proceeds are earmarked for UTSA athletics, including a mixed-use development sprawling over 36 acres set for lease proposals by the end of March, as per the San Antonio Report.
Having tackled many initiatives since joining in 2017, Campos is known for her aggressive plays. The athletics department also boasted a jump in its overall revenue, reporting a windfall of $50.43 million, with direct institutional support doubling to $18.34 million in fiscal 2023. With the strategy to maintain a competitive edge in the American Athletic Conference, UTSA is planning player development centers for baseball and softball along with a nutrition performance center, told the San Antonio Express-News.
But there's more to UTSA's game plan than expanding the bench. They're also revamping the playbook with several new facilities slated to enhance the student-athlete experience. The long-anticipated football practice pavilion promises to bring state-of-the-art amenities closer to the turf, according to a statement obtained by the San Antonio Express-News. Campos indicated that while timelines for the basketball and volleyball practice facility are aiming for a January 2025 groundbreaking, she's hoping to jump offside early and get a shovel in the ground by the end of this calendar year.
Playing field level isn't just about new buildings. UTSA's investment huddle is expected to be backed by a mix of institutional funds, the sale of Park West land, and philanthropic support. The vision stretches beyond bricks and mortar, with Salazar and Campos eyeing a full-fledged community hub around the UT Health building, potentially anchoring and helping to offset facility costs. UTSA is set to drive the ball down the field, leveraging its Park West acreage to cultivate a premier collegiate athletics environment, as Veronica Salazar, UTSA executive vice president for business affairs and chief enterprise development officer, shared with the San Antonio Express-News interview.
