A 63-year-old man from the District has been charged with enhanced second-degree theft after swiping goods from a Lidl grocery store late last year, officials said. Dwayne Bingham, of Washington, D.C., is facing a grand jury indictment for allegedly lifting merchandise from the market located at 3100 14th St NW on December 30, 2023. He's slated to be arraigned on March 21, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the MPD.
Authorities say Bingham was caught red-handed and apprehended shortly after the incident by the Metropolitan Police Department. His rap sheet includes at least two prior theft convictions, landing him a possible mandatory minimum of one year behind bars for the latest charge. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia has been cracking down on repeat offenders like Bingham, with 31 indictments rolled out since September last year, as detailed in a statement.
This no-nonsense approach to repeat theft convictions brings with it enhanced penalties aimed at deterring chronic shoplifters. Bingham, if convicted, would feel the full force of a system increasingly impatient with those who repeatedly run afoul of law.
The arraignment in March is expected to bring more light to the case, as well as set the tone for how the judiciary will handle cases involving career petty criminals going forward. It remains a contentious issue, with public opinion divided on the path to justice and rehabilitation for those entangled in a life of petty crime.
