A Washington D.C. man has copped to charges stemming from a wild May 2023 shootout outside a Dupont Circle nightclub. Dirk Easton, 27, pleaded guilty to multiple firearm offenses related to the incident that unfolded in the early hours outside the Abigail nightclub on M Street, as confirmed in a U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
The altercation turned shooting spree started with a fistfight in a parking garage close by and as per court documents escalated when Easton, not initially involved, charged at a silver Kia attempting to leave the scene and, brandishing a gun, he opened fire hitting the car multiple times along with the surrounding area, and ironically, himself with a bullet that ricocheted from his own firearm. He had previously been convicted of a different offense that carried a potential sentence of more than one year. Judge John D. Bates, who presided over Easton's case, has set a sentencing date for July 10, 2024.
In connection with the same incident, three others are facing justice for their roles, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Adrian Vinson has already been slapped with a 66-month prison term after pleading guilty to carrying a weapon during a drug crime, while Tyron Hines, who also admitted to a similar charge, awaits his sentencing on March 19, 2024. A status hearing for Garrick Richardson, charged with his weapon possession during the shootout, is penned in for March 18, 2024.
Easton's guilty plea could land him behind bars for a lengthy stint with a mandatory minimum of five years just for the possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and he could eye a maximum of 10 years on the assault with a deadly weapon charge, topped off with a possible 15-year stretch for unlawful ammo possession due to his prior convictions; a federal judge will weigh these penalties while considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines among other statutory factors, Easton now faces a total of up to $312,500 in fines on top of the potential prison time.
