Washington D.C.'s own Raekwon Sutton has been slapped with a hefty 17-year prison term for a broad daylight shooting in a Southeast apartment building, law enforcement officials said. The 26-year-old was found guilty on charges linked to assault and firearms after a courtroom showdown ending October 3, 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Sutton, in a blaze of fury, unloaded ten bullets into his ex-girlfriend's apartment door with family inside, the evidence presented by the prosecution showed. In a heated lead-up to the gunfire on March 19, 2022, Sutton bombarded his ex with threatening texts and voicemails, vowing to let bullets fly at her residence, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.

After unleashing the shots, the gunman didn't hit pause on his harrowing threats. More alarming messages followed, where he threatened to come back and shoot up the place again. Sutton, however, was intercepted by authorities before he could make good on that promise.

Congratulating the Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith expressed their gratitude for the determined work that went into clinching Sutton's conviction. The case also benefitted from the U.S. Marshals Service's backing, they noted. The U.S. Attorney's Office team, inclusive of Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Platt, Paralegal Specialists Nancy Murillo and Tiffany Fogle, and Victim/Witness Advocate Lu Lan, received kudos for their relentless effort.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Yasmin Emrani and Brian Yang, who took the helm on the prosecution, were also lauded for their roles in nailing down Sutton's sentence. Sutton now faces the consequences of his rage-fueled day that struck fear in the heart of a D.C. community as he starts his extended stint behind bars.
