The AirTags, small devices designed to track and locate missing items, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis during an event set for Thursday, March 7, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Union Market. According to BNN Breaking, the MPD officers will be present to help car owners with the installation of the devices, part of a broader strategy by the MPD to leverage technology for crime prevention. A recent incident where an individual was accused of using AirTags to track and steal cars in Orange, has reinforced the devices’ potential efficacy in combating vehicle theft, the effectiveness of such technology is undeniable.
As FOX 5 DC reports that the giveaway is aimed specifically at residents in seven northeastern neighborhoods of the city, which includes areas like Brentwood, Eckington, and Trinidad. Those living in Police Service Areas (PSAs) 501 through 507 can check online to see if they're eligible for the free AirTags, an initiative seen by officials as vital in helping residents safeguard their property.
The MPD has made it clear that the AirTag distribution event is contingent on supplies lasting, and only those who show up with their car can receive assistance with their new devices.
