In the small hours before dawn, tragedy struck a quiet Wayland street where a man lost his life. The Wayland Police and Fire Departments arrived at a gruesome scene after a fiery single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 43-year-old local man on Shaw Drive.
Wayland authorities received alerts of the crash around 1:36 a.m. Saturday. Racing against the cloak of night, first responders found a Kia EV6 ablaze, having careened into a tree. With the vehicle engulfed, the grim reality set that the driver was caught within, desperate attempts by firefighters to rescue him ensued, amid the scorching heat and twisted metal. Stated in a release obtained by John Guilfoil Public Relations, the driver, who was the car's sole occupant, was pronounced deceased at the tragic site of the collision.
The fire, voracious in its destruction, took firefighters using two hose lines nearly 40 minutes to extinguish. A somber dawn broke as the scene, active since the crash's occurrence, was finally cleared by 6 a.m. Assistance was provided by Massachusetts State Police and Sudbury Fire Department, the latter managing to offer station coverage during the incident.
"This was a truly tragic incident that resulted in the loss of one of our dear community members," Chief McPherson told John Guilfoil Public Relations. As the community begins to process this horrific event, the investigation continues. Led by the Wayland Police Department and detectives from the Massachusetts State Police assigned to Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, efforts persist to piece together the circumstances that led to this fatal encounter with destiny, and perhaps, in time, provide some semblance of closure to those who grieve the untimely departure of a man from their midst.
