These propositions are rolling out a hefty financial commitment, with an aim to salve wounds and shield communities against this relentless scourge.
According to an official statement by the White House, OGVP Deputy Directors Gregory Jackson and Rob Wilcox detailed sections of the President's budget proposal. The key allocations include $7.3 billion to refill the Crime Victims Fund, a significant infusion of $5 billion over the next decade to broaden Community Violence Intervention initiatives, and a considerable $17.7 billion for Department of Justice law enforcement agencies.
In the same briefing, a pronounced emphasis was placed on the augmentation of efforts under the Violence Against Women Act, with a substantial $800 million poised to tackle gender-based violence head-on. Furthermore, the President's ambitious goal to swell police officer ranks by 100,000 is supported by an outlay of $10.9 billion for community policing that's both effective and accountable. Plans are also in place for a new $1.2 billion Violent Crime Reduction and Prevention Fund to support law enforcement in addressing violent crime.
Additional facets of the financial distribution pointed towards research and implementation measures, with $60 million earmarked for studying gun violence and its complex web of causes and consequences. Also, $51 million is slotted to assist the FBI in fortifying the background check process for firearm buyers under 21, a safeguard put in position by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA). Recent reports suggest cities across the nation have begun seeing the fruits of these efforts, with a reported 12% dip in homicides from the previous year, a notable turnaround from the spike witnessed in 2020.
