A peaceful Easter Sunday at a northwest Atlanta park was disrupted when shots were fired, leaving a 3-year-old child grazed by a bullet. The incident occurred around 6:13 p.m. at Rodney Cook Sr. Park in the Vine City neighborhood, where police rushed to the scene after reports of gunfire, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The young victim was found alert and conscious after suffering a grazing bullet wound, success was transported to a local hospital as cautious onlookers recounted the chaos, assailants remain unidentified but the investigation continues, according to the 11Alive. Crime scene tape cordoned off parts of the park, typically a family gathering spot, which earlier that day hosted an Easter egg hunt.
"It was crowded, everything was beautiful, people was mingling, and the shooting rang out, and everybody started running," a resident who lives near the park told FOX 5. Concerns over safety have escalated among locals, who now demand an increased police presence, especially on weekends when the park attracts large crowds.
In response to previous violent incidents, the Atlanta City Council voted earlier in the month to steer $1.5 million into enhancing safety measures, including camera upgrades and police patrols. in city parks as warmer weather draws visitors the council's commitment is palpable but it remains to be seen if Rodney Cook Sr. Park will benefit from these improvements,
Detectives have been actively engaging witnesses to shed light on the unfortunate event. Although FOX 5 crews observed at least one individual being taken away in handcuffs, police have not confirmed any arrests linked to the shooting. The name and current condition of the young victim have not been released as the investigation moves forward.
