A tragedy unfolded in Logan Square on Tuesday when a 4-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting, as per Chicago police. The young boy was in a vehicle, on the 3300 block of West North Avenue around 3:50 p.m., when an unidentified assailant unleashed a hail of bullets. A police statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times confirmed the child was hit in the back and rushed to Stroger Hospital in a critical state.
Riding with his grandmother, the boy was struck by a case of misfortune that turned their ordinary errand for an ICEE into a scene of violence. According to a WLS interview, the grandmother recounted their harrowing experience, asserting that it was her swift actions post-shooting that saved her grandson’s life. After managing to drive him to a nearby hospital, the boy was then transferred to Stroger Hospital. "She's extremely brave," said Alderperson Jessie Fuentes.
The area near Humboldt Park where the incident took place, now bearing the scars of the event, witnessed police marking evidence beside two vehicles pockmarked by the shooting, as reported by the WLS. Alderperson Fuentes stated that the boy and his grandmother were innocent bystanders caught in what is believed to be a targeted attack. A white vehicle occupied by two men was also hit, though they escaped unscathed.
In a community response, Fuentes announced that starting tomorrow, alongside organizers and violence interrupters, there will be canvassing at the crime scene to engage with the neighborhood and business owners. This effort to heal, in the wake of the strike, comes at a time when residents like Maria Ugarte express dismay over the city's perpetuating violence. "It's unbelievable that we still have to suffer this kind of violence in our city," Ugarte told WLS.
As the investigation by Area Five detectives continues, the Chicago police have not released additional details about the suspects or motive behind the shooting. The incident adds another sorrowful chapter to the city's struggle with gun violence, leaving a community to pick up the pieces while a small child fights for his life.
