Firefighters are known for running into danger, but sometimes danger finds them in unexpected ways. The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) were called to a blaze on March 16 at the intersection of Dearwood Drive and Third Avenue SW. Teams worked diligently to quell the flames, but the day's true test came after the fire was under control. A firefighter, whose name hasn't been disclosed, found himself in an accident involving two fire apparatuses as units were clearing the scene, an incident that brings an additional layer to the risks faced by first responders.
Immediately after the collision, the firefighter's colleagues leapt into action, providing "extensive patient care" before rushing him to the hospital, according to Atlanta Police Department. Their rapid response and training were evident in the precision with which they handled one of their own in peril. Currently stable, the injured firefighter remains hospitalized as he recovers from the accident that, on another day, might have been just an afterthought in the aftermath of battling the elements. The AFRD hasn't released details on how the incident occurred.
