The Fulton County Jail is facing scrutiny after inmate Leonard Fortner was fatally stabbed on Wednesday, an incident which has highlighted ongoing concerns about the facility's management and conditions. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Fortner, 37, fell victim to multiple stab wounds inflicted by fellow inmate Edward Cherry, 36, prompting an investigation by Atlanta Police Department. The altercation occurred at 6:24 p.m. and Fortner was pronounced dead after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital at 7:39 p.m.
Further controversy arose when it became known that Fortner had been held without bond since January on allegations of criminal damage to property while his accused attacker, Cherry, has been incarcerated since April 2020 on charges such as aggravated assault and kidnapping, also without bond, raising questions about the jail's prolonged detention practices and the legal process overall. Fulton County Sheriff Patrick "Pat" Labat expressed his devastation over the incident, while simultaneously pointing to the need for a new jail and criticizing recent funding cuts by county commissioners; Sheriff Labat conveyed that he was hurt by decisions including the ending of double overtime and the rejection of state-funded aid as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Amidst this situation, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens released a statement asserting the urgent need for prioritizing human life in the management of the county's facilities, referencing historical underfunding by the Fulton County Commission which, according to him, has led to the current crisis and loss of lives within the jail, as told to 11Alive.
Meanwhile, some county board members, including Commissioner Khadijah Abdur-Rahman, described the issue as one of management and accountability calling for an honest tackling of the jail issues, "Let's be crystal clear about what this is.
