The culinary prowess of Austin is in the spotlight, as the James Beard Foundation has unfurled its list of finalists for its prestigious awards. Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel, the chef/co-owner of East Austin's Birdie’s, has snagged a finalist place for Best Chef: Texas, according to an announcement by the foundation on April 3rd covered by Eater Austin.
After opening its doors in July 2021, Birdie's has quickly become a darling of the local scene—a haven for New American cuisine and wine lovers. Although, the city's representation may seem lean compared to last year's shutout. Malechek-Ezekiel, a Texas native, comes with an impressive resume including stints at renowned eateries like Jeffrey’s in Austin, Gramercy Tavern, and Untitled at the Whitney in New York City.
Another Texan establishment making waves is Lockhart's barbecue joint Barbs B Q, which emerged as a finalist for Best New Restaurant. In 2023, the spot was anointed one of the best new restaurants by Eater. CultureMap Austin highlights area semifinalists like Ramen Del Barrio and Mariela Camacho of Comadre Panadería also garnered nods in national categories for Best New Restaurant and Outstanding Pastry Chef respectively, yet ultimately didn't make the cut to finalists.
Despite the steep competition, Malechek-Ezekiel has not been left basking solely in her James Beard recognition. Birdie's was recently ranked as the No. 4 best restaurant in the country by Food & Wine. Further, the acclaimed chef is slated to bask in the limelight again on April 11, where she will be honored at CultureMap's Tastemaker Awards, as reported by KVUE.
The road to culinary stardom is no easy feat, and the James Beard Awards serve as a testament to exceptional talent and gastronomic innovation. With Malechek-Ezekiel representing Austin's vibrant food scene, the city's standing as a culinary destination continues to gain momentum. The winners of the prestigious awards will be revealed on June 10, during a ceremony set to take place in Chicago. Aimed at honoring the crème de la crème in the food and beverage industry, the James Beard Awards are renowned for recognizing the outstanding work of chefs, restaurateurs, authors, and food journalists across the United States.
