Balcones Heights Police Fatally Shoot Woman After Alleged Attack with Homemade WeaponSource: Google Street View

A confrontation between a woman wielding a homemade weapon and Balcones Heights police officers resulted in her being shot dead Friday night.

The fatal episode unfurled after an officer spotted the woman, identified as Marta Prater, 49, loitering on private property and approached her to leave the area, according to Balcones Heights Police Chief John Jahanara. As reported by KENS 5, Prater became hostile and allegedly smashed a patrol vehicle's rear window with the weapon.

Further efforts to de-escalate the situation by the initial officer, supported by a backup, proved futile even after employing tasers three times in an attempt to subdue Prater, Jahanara detailed. She then reportedly pursued the primary officer while brandishing her weapon, prompting her shooting by the responding backup officer.

After the shooting, officers on the scene immediately administered first aid before paramedics arrived and rushed Prater to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. KSAT reports that the tasering had no impact on the fired-up assailant.

This incident is under investigation as a developing story.
