Battle Creek Man Charged with Open Murder After Fatal Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another InjuredSource: Google Street View

A Battle Creek man is facing open murder and several other felony charges after an early morning shooting resulted in one death and left a woman critically injured. Thomas Knickerbocker, 43, was arraigned on Wednesday, with charges including open murder and assault with intent to murder, according to FOX 17.

The deadly incident occurred around 3 a.m. Tuesday on Spencer Street, just north of Michigan Avenue. Upon arrival, Battle Creek police discovered 47-year-old Clayton Holt, who later died at the scene, and a 34-year-old woman, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition. FOX 17 reports that the woman's condition had improved to stable as of Thursday.

Knickerbocker, who now remains in Calhoun County Jail without bond, was also charged with felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and habitual fourth violent offender status. The News Channel 3 reports that he was arrested a few blocks away from the shooting site and is due back in court for a pre-examination conference on April 26.

The charges stemmed from the events on Spencer Street, where police found the two victims with apparent gunshot wounds. The Battle Creek Enquirer noted that if convicted of the more serious charge, Knickerbocker could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary exam on May 3.
