A group of boaters is under scrutiny after a video surfaced on social media depicting them dumping trash into the ocean near Boca Raton. This environmentally reprehensible act was caught on camera Sunday during the annual boating rendezvous known as Boca Bash, and has since sparked public outrage and an ensuing investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The distressing footage, showing two individuals aboard the Halcyon vessel tossing out rubbish without a care for the subsequent litter left floating in its wake, was uploaded by Wavy Boats, a YouTube channel known for capturing boats navigating through Boca Inlet's turbulent waters. According to NBC Miami, the event has prompted the FWC to launch an active investigation into the incident.

Unregulated waste disposal poses significant risks to marine ecosystems and public health, a concern echoed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In the video, locals Jill Ofer and Ed Zybert expressed their dismay at the sight, "It's everything you can think of, from bottles to cans to garbage to plastic, everything that can kill the environment. It's awful," they told WPTV. "The plastic will stay in the ocean and that's how you kill the fish and the whole environment. It's pretty outrageous."

Florida's litter law stipulates heavy penalties for such actions, with fines up to $1,000 and potential jail time for those caught dumping more than 15 pounds of waste. However, not concerned by the potentially hefty fines, Pavni Sunkara remarked after viewing the video, "Fines? It could be a bunch of rich people who money means nothing," before suggesting that culprits should partake in clean-up groups to understand the impact of their actions, in a statement reported by WPTV.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed to WPTV that they are treating the episode as "illegal dumping of trash," and further updates on the investigation are expected soon. Meanwhile, the Boca Bash organizers distanced themselves from the incident, clarifying that they regularly advise participants to maintain cleanliness and do not endorse drinking while operating any vessels.
