Chicago erupted in turmoil Tuesday as police accountability authorities released harrowing bodycam footage of a fatal traffic stop that spiraled into chaos in Humboldt Park last month, leading to the death of 26-year-old Dexter Reed and the shooting of an officer. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Reed was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire after being pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt on March 21. The Sun-Times also mentioned Reed had been awaiting trial on a pending gun case and had previously been employed by a security firm with connections to the Chicago Police Department.
In what unfolded as a rapid-fire sequence, lasting just 41 seconds, officers let off nearly 100 shots after Reed shot first striking an officer in the arm, COPA revealed in a bold statement highlighted by WTTW News. "Each use of deadly force must be evaluated by examining the totality of circumstances, including the officer’s actions prior to their use of force," said Ephraim Eaddy, COPA’s First Deputy Chief Administrator, the recommendation was that four of the involved officers be stripped of their policing powers during the probe, WTTW News added Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, deeply disturbed by the footage, stressed the importance of holding officers accountable while demanding peace as the investigation proceeds.
Reed's post-mortem depiction painted by family and friends stood in stark contrast to the circumstances of his death; reports portrayed him as a talented basketball player who dreamed of a future in sports broadcasting, had a penchant for Jay-Z's music, and relished vegetables and baked beans, a poignant reminder from the family lawyer, who described the shooting as "unjustified" in a letter to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
