A Chicago police officer has been slapped with felony charges for an alleged sexual assault while a woman was in custody, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Officer Stephan Shaw, 32, is facing counts of official misconduct and custodial sexual misconduct, this follows accusations of groping a woman and making lewd comments during her detainment at a River North police station last year.
After turning himself in on Monday, Shaw, who has been a Chicago police officer since June 2022, was subsequently relieved of his duties - a necessary step when the agents of law become conflators of fear, their authority unreasonable when used to render those shackled not by freedom's array but bound by helplessness, as Shaw is accused of sliding his hand into the woman's shorts to touch her buttocks and genitals. According to CBS News, during her harrowing ordeal handcuffed to a metal bar, Shaw also allegedly looked her up on Facebook using his phone, and following her release, messaged her about meeting for pizza when she inquired about her court date - she responded with a heart emoji.
During a short court hearing, Shaw's attorney, Tim Grace, fervently denied the allegations, asserting the woman had become combative after her arrest on a retail theft charge and claiming she had not filed any immediate complaints despite the presence of multiple officers. Nevertheless, Cook County prosecutors have revealed the accuser confided in her mother quickly after her ordeal and reported the incident to the authorities the next day; she has since filed a federal lawsuit against Shaw and the city of Chicago.
Judge William Fahy, presiding over the case, did not detain Shaw but imposed a no-contact order and required Shaw to relinquish any firearms he possesses as a condition of his bail. Shaw's next court appearance is scheduled for April 24, facing the possibility of up to five years in prison if convicted, he undoubtedly stands at the precipice of both legal reckonings and moral judgment.
