Conyers is rolling out some much-needed relief with their new Storm Assistance Program (SAP) for residents hammered by the recent EF2 tornado. The city has earmarked $50,000 to help those hit the hardest and without the cash to handle the aftermath, aiming to clean up storm-battered neighborhoods.
According to an announcement on the City of Conyers website, targets for cleanup will include high-impact areas such as Woodland Road and Springwood Drive, amongst others. The initiative is a response to the severe weather that swept through Conyers and Rockdale County in the early morning of April 3, leaving significant damage in its wake.
Residents in need can apply for a certified arborist from the city’s Public Works and Transportation to assess their damaged property and determine the necessity of tree and debris clearance. Once approved, the city will coordinate with a professional tree removal service to take on the task. This move by the city officials is designed to reduce the financial and emotional burden on the community members as they recover from the natural disaster.
"City crews and our residents with the means to do so have done a fantastic job cleaning up so quickly after the tornado," Mayor Vince Evans stated. He also added, "We are fortunate to be in a position to assist those who want to clean up their yards, but may not have the funds available to do so, and to take care of it with assistance of city staff and a capable and reliable tree service," according to the City of Conyers.
The city is using flyers and their online portal to get the word out about SAP, ensuring those affected but not necessarily tech-savvy can still apply. Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2024, and are available at City Hall for those who lack computer access.
