The political landscape in Arizona's Legislative District 8 saw a reshuffle this week as the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed a new member to the statehouse. In a move filling the gap left by the previous officeholder, Deborah Nardozzi has stepped in to represent a stretch of southeastern Maricopa County which includes parts of Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, and the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, as reported by the county’s official notification.
Following the letter of the law, the Board made its bipartisan requirement clear, stating, "Arizona law requires us to appoint a person from the same political party as the person who previously vacated the office. We did so today," Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin said. Nardozzi, who before managing her political consulting agency, served as an executive assistant in a D.C.-based law firm, brings a wealth of campaign management experience to the table. While congratulating her, Galvin added, "I wish Deborah Nardozzi well in her endeavor to represent Legislative District 8 at the State Capitol."
The appointment was not a solo flight. Nardozzi was selected from a list of three candidates. These individuals were put forward by the LD-8 precinct committeemen and, as mandated by Arizona law, all applicants were vetted to ensure they lived in the district and hailed from the same political party as the outgoing legislator.
A seasoned political consultant with 15 years running her agency under her belt, Nardozzi is poised to bridge the political divide, having also led the charge as Chair for Legislative District 24, according to her credentials outlined in the announcement. She brings her extensive experience navigating the corridors of power both at federal and local levels, an asset likely to aid her as she assumes this interim role until the year's end.
Nardozzi is slated to serve in the Arizona House of Representatives until December 31, 2024. She will be occupying the seat during a crucial time, leading up to the General Election on November 5th, 2024, when the position will be contested anew. Voters will be watching her tenure closely, evaluating if she indeed delivers the effective representation that LD-8 requires and deserves.
