A Decatur man has pled guilty to a heinous string of crimes against his girlfriend, including sexual trafficking and aggravated assault. Mykal Jett, 27, agreed to a plea deal on two counts of Trafficking of Persons for Sexual Servitude, False Imprisonment, and two counts of Aggravated Assault, as announced by DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston.
On a fateful day in December 2019, the DeKalb County Police received a domestic violence call, leading them to a home where a nightmare of abuse and coercion unfolded on McGlynn Drive. The 22-year-old victim, a woman caught in the web of a malicious relationship with Jett, described to investigators a chilling system of control and violence. According to the investigation, she stated that the defendant forced her to earn $1,000 nightly through prostitution. If she failed, the beatings would commence. Controlling the woman’s access to drugs, to which she was addicted, Jett made sure she could not escape his grasp for long.
The abuse escalated on an occasion where the woman attempted to break free using a rideshare vehicle. Jett dragged her instead into his car and drove her to a different location, where he subjected her to a prolonged six-hour ordeal of brutal violence. In a statement obtained by the Dekalb District Attorney's office, the victim recounted how Jett forced her to strip, then mercilessly beat her with a rake until it shattered. Amidst the horror, Jett stuffed socks into her mouth, pressed a hot iron to her face, and cruelly ordered her to stand outside in freezing temperatures while drenched.
Confronted with video evidence of the assault on the victim's phone, and the victim's body marred by severe bruises, Jett’s fate was sealed. Senior Judge David B. Irwin handed down a decisive 25-year sentence – Jett is to spend 14 years behind bars, with the balance on probation. The DA’s team, comprised of Senior Assistant District Attorneys Charles Ciba and Elizabeth Tarver, District Attorney Investigator Camella Mungroo-Patterson, and Victim Advocate Peggy Remy, secured the conviction. District Attorney Investigator Casey Benton, having previously served with the DeKalb County Police Department, led the original investigation, official sources reported.
