Six teens were nabbed by Eastpointe police after a chase involving a stolen car early Wednesday morning, according to local authorities. The police were tipped off to suspicious activity around 1:30 AM when three individuals were seen peering into a parked vehicle on Charles R Avenue. The group fled the scene in a silver Hyundai, which led to a police pursuit that ended in a crash near the intersection of 10 Mile Road and Saxony Avenue, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
The ages of the culprits ranged from 14 to 17, and upon capture, law enforcement recovered two handguns, marijuana, split ski masks, and gloves. The vehicle they were driving had a broken rear window and was missing its license plate, it had also been reported as stolen. "Luckily, no one that was involved in this incident was injured," Detective Lt. Alexander Holish said in a statement obtained by Macomb Daily.
Authorities are now delving into potential charges for the young suspects, and the case has been turned over to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. The Eastpointe Police Department indicated that semi-automatic handguns were discovered on two of the adolescents, as reported by Mlive. The investigation led to a statement by Detective Lt. Holish, who assured that "Charges likely will include fleeing and eluding police, firearms possession, and motor vehicle theft."
The incident has additionally raised questions about parental responsibility. The Eastpointe city attorney is being consulted to determine, whether the parents of the juveniles can be charged for their children's crimes according to Macomb Daily. Details of the situation are still unfolding, as the community reckons with the disconcerting reality that children, mere steps from childhood, are embroiled in such serious criminal acts.
