Glendale sees a historic change in its leadership as Elen Asatryan, a councilwoman known for her civil rights activism and community advocacy, has been named the city's new Mayor. At the city council meeting on April 2nd, Asatryan succeeded Dan Brotman to become the first Armenian-American woman, the first immigrant woman, and the youngest to hold the prestigious role in Glendale's City Hall.
Asatryan's political career began with her election to the city council in July 2022, marking her rapid ascent in local politics, since then, she has been praised for her extensive background in policy and community organizing at local, state, and federal levels. Additionally, she made her mark as a successful businesswoman with the foundation of The Stark Group in 2017, a public affairs, and political consulting firm, as reported by the City of Glendale.
Before her involvement in city politics, Asatryan has been at the forefront of vital initiatives, including establishing a task force focused on domestic violence and spearheading educational programs to bolster voter registration. According to the City of Glendale's official website, her efforts have significantly impacted the region, with over 50,000 new voters in Los Angeles County over two years and the inclusion of the Armenian Genocide curriculum in California's public education system.
"I take this responsibility with a listening ear, an open heart, and a unifying spirit. My commitment remains unchanged: to help foster a government where marginalized voices are heard as loud as any and barriers are torn down," Asatryan stated, emphasizing her dedication to inclusivity, as quoted on the City of Glendale's website.
