A deadly collision has halted traffic on the Far Northwest Side, claiming the life of a driver after a dump truck lost control and barreled into a pickup truck, officials said.

The fatal event unfolded just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday when the dump truck, heading along State Highway 16 South near Creekside Road, veered out of lane and slammed into a Chevy Silverado. In what authorities described as a horrific scene, the pickup's driver was pronounced dead on the spot. FOX San Antonio reported the Bexar County Sheriff's deputies noting the substantial impact caused the dump truck driver to be ejected and trapped under his vehicle. Rescue teams worked swiftly to free him before he was taken to a hospital with severe head injuries.

The incident further complicated traffic along the already busy highway as law enforcement redirected vehicles from Hwy 16 South to Hwy 211 South. Meanwhile, northbound commuters detoured back to Hwy 211 South, as authorities worked diligently to manage the aftermath and launch an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Another account of the accident by KSAT provided further details, stating that the dump truck was making a left onto Hwy 211 South when it seemingly lost control and initiated the fatal crash. The identity of the deceased has yet to be released pending notification of relatives, and the condition of the dump truck driver remains critical.

Traffic updates and road closures were still being issued as investigation teams and emergency responders continued their duties at the scene. Drivers were advised to find alternative routes and avoid the area to lessen congestion and ensure the safety of all those present.
