A Fayetteville Walmart became the scene of a tragedy Friday night as gunfire rang out, leaving a teenager dead and a nine-year-old girl wounded. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Fayetteville Police Department is on the hunt for 19-year-old Adrian Jelks, who allegedly opened fire while on duty as an employee at the store.
The chaos resulted in the death of 19-year-old Antavius Holton from Riverdale and injuries to an innocent bystander — a nine-year-old whose name has yet to be released. In response to the violence, Holton's family has created a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses. Despite the incident, business continued as usual at the Walmart the following day, with shoppers moving through aisles cordoned off by yellow tape, unaware of the previous night's events.
Lia Bowers, a shopper at the Walmart, recounted her terrifying experience to 11Alive, saying, "It was kind of quiet and people were acting kind of funny. I didn't know myself what was going on, so I was just trying to get in and out as soon as possible." The incident has shaken the local community, with Fayetteville Chief of Police Scott Gray stating, "The juvenile victim at this time we believe was an innocent bystander and was just hit by a stray bullet being fired by the suspect."
Adding to the arrest of Jelks, 19-year-old Sandra Romero Nunez has been taken into custody, faced with charges of being party to a crime for murder and aggravated assault, as per the same FOX 5 Atlanta report. The particular nature of her involvement remains unclear, but investigators are continuously piecing together the events that turned a routine shopping evening into a night of horror. Fayetteville shoppers like Shawn Gray expressed their disbelief, "I don't really feel safe anywhere. I mean really? At the Walmart in Fayetteville? It's crazy."
