Jim Beard, Atlanta's ex-finance boss, may soon admit to his wrongdoings in a corruption scandal that has rattled city hall since 2017. Scheduled for a plea hearing on Monday, Beard is the last in a line of defendants ensnared by federal investigators, reported Atlanta News First. The exact charges to which Beard is expected to plead guilty have not been disclosed, stoking speculation about the implications of his case for the city's fiscal integrity.

Facing an eight-count indictment, Beard's charges include wire fraud, theft from the government, and possession of machine guns amongst others. The former CFO, holding his position from late 2011 until May of 2018, allegedly exploited his role for personal gain, a betrayal of public trust on a grand scale. "Jim Beard allegedly abused his position as one of the most powerful executives in the City of Atlanta to commit federal crimes for his own gain," said former U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak in a statement shared by WSBTV.

Prior to Beard's upcoming court date, the city witnessed the sentencing of eight other officials and city contractors, including Mitzi Bickers, former Atlanta human resources director. Notorious for her $2 million bribe-taking fiasco, Bickers is currently serving a 14-year federal sentence. Beard's indictment has similarly tarnished the image of Atlanta's governance, casting long shadows on the practices of city administration while fueling cynicism toward elected officials and their appointees.

According to WSBTV, the charges levied against Beard also include obstruction of federal tax laws and making false statements. IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge James E. Dorsey underscored the depth of Beard’s legal troubles, stating, “His desire for money, along with the power and luxuries it buys, drove him to allegedly perpetrate crimes violating his position and public trust.” Federal court records signal that the hearing will take place in an Atlanta federal courtroom early Monday morning.
