A 20-year-old man has been indicted on charges stemming from the fatal stabbing of a homeless man on the day after Christmas last year, officials said. Antony Kassab is facing charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon for the death of 35-year-old Cody Funk in Gresham, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.

The indictment also includes charges connected to an attack on another victim on February 9, 2024, the DA's office reported. The nature of the incident was not immediately clear.

Details of the first gruesome crime came to light when police were called to the scene near SE 190th Ave. and SE Division St. on the morning of December 26, where they found Funk unresponsive. An autopsy later revealed that he had been killed by multiple stab wounds. Funk had been contending with homelessness at the time of his murder.

After a rigorous investigation led by the Gresham Police Department and East Multnomah County Major Crimes Team, evidence was gathered and reviewed, which eventually pointed to Kassab as a suspect. Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey took the case before a grand jury, which returned with a true bill of indictment against Kassab on April 12.

It is important to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation of a crime, and Kassab maintains the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in the court of law. The DA's Office emphasized this in their announcement, noting, "Kassab is innocent unless and until proven guilty."
