A man wanted on armed robbery charges was shot and killed by police in Gwinnett County, Georgia, after exchanging gunfire with officers, according to a release by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The deceased, identified as 39-year-old Steven Scott of Lula, GA, was approached by officers near the intersection of Jimmy Carter Blvd and Peachtree Industrial Blvd on Thursday evening over active warrants for his arrest.

The Gwinnett County Police Department reported that when officers attempted to apprehend Scott around 6:30 p.m., he fled in his burgundy Jeep, leading to a police pursuit. The chase escalated when Scott fired at officers who had located him. Despite officers’ efforts to stop him, including an attempted blockade by a GCPD detective, Scott continued to open fire, hitting a detective's unmarked car, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. After losing control of his vehicle and crashing near a utility pole, Scott's jeep was halted by a police PIT maneuver.

The confrontation reached its fatal end when Scott reportedly continued to shoot at the officers as he tried to escape the disabled jeep. One of the officers fired back, killing Scott. The Gwinnett County fire and EMS pronounced Scott dead at the scene after officers had attempted to provide medical aid.

No officers were injured during the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, as is typical in officer-involved shootings.
