Houston Braces for Stormy Week with Severe Weather Threat, NWS Advises CautionSource: Unsplash/ Vita Leonis

Houston residents ought to brace themselves for a week of choppy weather conditions, packing an umbrella as showers and thunderstorms are set to batter the city with significant chances of heavy rain and potentially severe weather on the horizon. Today, there's a simmering 40 percent chance of rain after 3 p.m., with gloomy clouds promising an 82-degree Fahrenheit high, and gusts that could reach up to 30 mph, as forecasted by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The evening is looking just as murky, with showers and thunderstorms probable before 11 p.m., and likely after 5 a.m., southeast winds persisting at 10 to 15 mph, and potential rainfall hitting between three-quarters and one inch. Tomorrow is another soggy bet, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation forecasted; this may bring up to half an inch of new rainfall before 2 p.m. According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, there's also a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms stretching from Central to South Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley tomorrow, where isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible, and where strong heating of a moist airmass could give way to moderate to locally strong destabilization.

In addition to tumultuous skies, Houston is also combating water threats from below, as a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through this evening, warning of minor coastal flooding due to a mix of high tides and increased wave activity. The advisory, shared by NWS Houston on X, further cautions against strong rip currents along Gulf-facing beaches today.

Looking beyond Monday, Houstonians can expect a wet week ahead. There's a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday, with similar chances throughout the week. The city remains humid, with occasional breaks of partly sunny skies amidst ongoing storm threats. Friday brings a high of 87 degrees and a 30 percent chance of showers, potentially causing disturbances as the weekend approaches. However, Thursday offers a temporary respite with a 20 percent chance of showers and a high near 87, though nighttime showers may interrupt again.
