Brace yourselves, Manassas Street regulars—the road is shutting down for a major utility overhaul. Starting Monday, April 15, at 9 a.m., the stretch of Manassas Street between Poplar Avenue and Lane Avenue will be off-limits for through traffic, according to the City of Memphis website. This necessary inconvenience is due to MLGW's project which will see the old utility infrastructure torn out and new hardware installed in its place.
Drivers should be aware, for their daily commute, that although Manassas Street will close to through traffic, those living on the affected streets will still be able to reach their destinations up to the point of closure. With local access maintained, the project is designed to enhance the reliability of the area's utility services for years to come.
As reported by the City of Memphis, the project is set to be wrapped up by the evening of Tuesday, May 14, meaning that for a full month, commuters will need to find alternative routes. MLGW has not issued a detailed timeline on the stages of the construction, but motorists and residents can get additional information directly from MLGW for the latest updates.
Frustrations are expected to rise among locals as they face a month of detours and delays. To ease the temporary pain inflicted by traffic reroutes, MLGW has committed to executing the utility improvements with efficiency. A spokesperson from MLGW, without providing specifics on the steps being taken, explained that the upgrades were essential for "improving the area’s utility services."
