Amarpreet Singh Sidhu, 35, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after allegedly threatening and flashing a Lyft driver, an incident sparking conversations about safety in the industry. According to the Express News, Sidhu was picked up from a Northside bar called the Tipsy Cowgirl and began the ride by crudely critiquing the music and escalating to making threats and unwanted physical contact with the driver.
The trouble reportedly began when Sidhu blared rap music from his phone, making lewd remarks about family members, and chillingly declared to the female driver, "You're my next victim," before attempting to change his destination mid-trip, the driver managed to drop him off at a Chevron gas station only after he punched the car's interior as reported by Express News. Sidhu was quick to get arrested, yet he posted the $5,000 bond and was back on the streets the very same day, essentially raising questions about the adequacy of such measures to deter predatory behavior.
A separate incident weeks earlier involved a local Lyft driver, Raquel De La Garza, who shared with KENS 5, her encounter with a different man who allegedly exposed himself during a ride. De La Garza successfully diffused the situation on her own and later informed Lyft of the ordeal, yet she remains uncertain whether the company banned the individual as she continues to match up with what appear to be fake accounts and profiles.
Expressing frustration over the incident, De La Garza said, "It's not cute, it’s not flirty, it’s sexual harassment," speaking to the broader tension ride-share drivers face when incidents cross the line into criminality, lack of support from the platforms they depend on for their livelihood is apparent. She adds, regarding the safety measures in place, "Always be safe, always keep your head on a swivel," as per KENS 5 report. Lyft has listed safety tips for drivers on its website but has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the arrest and ongoing safety concerns.
The suspect faces additional legal trouble as he is also accused of another indecent exposure incident on February 25th, with a hearing scheduled for May 1. The cases underscore the alarming risks faced by ride-share drivers as they navigate the delicate balance between earning a livelihood and maintaining personal safety on the unpredictable roads of their profession.
