A Mesa neighborhood is on edge following the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Gavin Wadzinski, who was found dead early Sunday morning. Mesa police are investigating the incident as a homicide after Wadzinski was discovered with a gunshot wound near the area of Teton Circle and Recker Road. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the shooting occurred around 1 a.m., and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
An area resident reported to Arizona's Family, "At around 12:45 a.m., I woke up and heard two gunshots real close together." The disquiet that followed carried through the community as police units and a mobile command unit were seen outside, and the crime scene remained active into the morning hours. The Mesa Police Department is now examining all motives, including Wadzinski's past as a sex offender, confirmed by authorities.
Wadzinski was previously convicted of attempted sexual conduct with a minor and was under lifetime probation following an offense in 2022. Police stated that he had been registered as a sex offender, which had been communicated to the neighborhood via a flyer distributed by the city a few months ago. The flyer included his photo, address, and criminal record. "The victim was a 14-year-old girl," the flyer indicated, as corroborated by Mesa police to Arizona's Family.
Investigators have been canvassing the neighborhood, searching for surveillance footage that might offer leads in the case. "That’s one thing the investigators were doing. They were combing the neighborhood. They’re looking for video evidence through people’s Ring cameras and surveillance cameras, things like that, trying to come up with a lead in any way we could," Detective Richard Encinas told Arizona's Family. Despite the efforts, no suspect information has been released, and the police believe the shooting was an isolated incident.
Residents are now dealing with a mix of fear and speculation, as some ponder if the shooting might have been an act of street justice – an undercurrent, perhaps, of the uneasy knowledge that a killer remains at large. "Just, you know, worrisome. You know, in a safe neighborhood where you live and thought nothing like that would ever happen," one neighbor expressed. Mesa Police are urging anyone with information to come forward, regardless of how seemingly insignificant it may appear.
