An ace Michigan unemployment insurance investigator has snagged his third national commendation for playing a key role in dismantling a sinister multi-state fraud ring that aimed to pilfer millions from the government coffers, per an announcement by the state's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).
Kurt Eggly, the UIA regulation agent and senior investigator, received the Department of Labor Inspector General Special Achievement Award; this accolade marked the sixth time UIA's anti-fraud maneuvers have earned federal recognition in the past seven years, according to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. UIA's steadfast claws, embedded in the relentless pursuit of bad actors, culminated in 15 suspects now serving time behind bars, previously convicted of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft, the UIA detailed, coordination with the FBI, USDOL-OIG, and the United States Attorney's Office was crucial in this systemic purge of deceit.
These skilled fraudsters, who filed close to 600 fraudulent claims across 19 states, including 100 in Michigan, would have successfully swindled nearly $7 million had it not been for the intrepid investigative work of Eggly and his team—as UIA Director Julia Dale touted his "best in investigative techniques" in a statement reported by The Detroit News. Following the crackdown, courts laid down restitution orders to the tune of $2.2 million.
Eggly's gavel of justice swinging, coupled with UIA's recent boasts of over $90 million recovered and 91 convictions out of 162 charged individuals, has painted a target on fraudsters' backs—putting them on notice that Michigan's UIA will not stand idle while the trusty fiber of the state's social safety net is unraveled by thievery; the agency is striding toward a brighter horizon, earmarking a 2025 launch for a revamped claims processing system and beefing up staff to bolster anti-fraud efforts.
