
A Tennessee educator has been distinguished with the honor of 2024 National Teacher of the Year, the apex accolade for teachers across the United States. Missy Testerman, who teaches at Rogersville City School and directs its ESL program, takes the crown for her exceptional dedication to students and impassioned commitment to the teaching profession. The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) bestowed the honor, initiating a year of ambassadorial duties where Testerman will advocate for teachers and students nationwide.
Testerman's new role will have her traversing the country, distributing her knowledge, voicing the struggles of educators and, lighting the path for potential teachers. "Congratulations to Rogersville Elementary's Missy Testerman on being named Tennessee's first National Teacher of the Year in more than 35 years," Gov. Bill Lee expressed. His accolades echoed the sentiment of the community, "Teaching is more than a career, it's a calling. I join all Tennesseans in thanking Missy for her dedication to students, preparing them to thrive in the classroom and beyond." In a statement obtained by the Tennessee Department of Education, he noted the pride the state holds as she begins her tenure as a national education figurehead.
The journey to this commendation was rigorous. Testerman became Tennessee's Teacher of the Year in August 2023 before ascending to one of the four finalists for the national title this January. According to the Tennessee Department of Education, she went through an exacting interview process with the CCSSO’s National Teacher of the Year selection committee before claiming the title.
Boasting over three decades of teaching under her belt, Testerman's achievements include leading the Rogersville Education Association and mentoring new educators. She also engages in her local community, coordinating summer camps and contributing on various school and civic boards. "Her dedication to the teaching profession and her students is truly exceptional," Edwin Jarnagin, Director of Schools at Rogersville City Schools told the Tennessee Department of Education, highlighting her role as a community connector and a beacon for educational excellence in the rural environs of Rogersville.
