Flames engulfed a Pilsen neighborhood home on Wednesday night, leaving it in ruins and causing damage to two adjacent properties, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. The Chicago Fire Department battled the two-alarm fire that broke out around 8:30 p.m. at a residence in the 1300 block of West 16th Street. Although the blaze resulted in the complete collapse of one home and damage to two others, officials confirmed that there were no injuries.
Neighbors told the Tribune that the gutted home had been vacant and under construction. Under renovation, the owner of the incinerated house, Hafeez Shaka, revealed to ABC7 Chicago that a contractor was fireproofing the property when the fire occurred. "It is what it is, there's nothing I can do about it," Shaka said. "I wouldn't worry too much about it." According to firefighting personnel, the aggressive response involved nearly 100 firefighters and 30 pieces of equipment, managing to quell the flames by approximately 9:45 p.m.
Eric Tenfelde, a local resident whose house to the south suffered damages, described the rapid escalation of the incident to the Tribune. "I turned around and it was already blazing up quite a bit," Tenfelde recalled after being alerted by a passerby who rang his doorbell to inform him of the neighboring conflagration. Tenfelde, whose wife was out of town, was outside with his phone in hand while his daughter had not yet returned from lacrosse practice, shared his concern primarily about water damage to the front of his house. He also expressed uncertainty about the condition of the other damaged residence.
The cause of the fire is still a matter of investigation, with officials piecing together the night's events. Amid the charred remnants and sagging rooftops, the community breathes a collective sigh of relief that the terror of flames did not claim any lives — a fact that underscores the material losses with a note of bittersweet gratitude. Restoration efforts and inquiries into the origin of the blaze continue as Pilsen starts the process of healing and rebuilding. Further details on the incident may yield more answers in the coming days.
