Residents of Detroit's North End were hit with a rude awakening yesterday as they discovered the windows on over 20 vehicles smashed out. The vandalism occurred near the intersection of Brush Street and Holbrook Avenue, according to a FOX 2 report. At this moment, it is unclear whether any items were taken from the damaged cars.
Detroit police have a suspect in their sights thanks to a witness leading them to a Project Green Light location, which potentially captured the vandal on camera. Despite this lead, no arrests have been made so far. As WWJ Newsradio detailed, this isn't the first instance of such destruction in the area, with a similar spree occurring back in February 2023.
At least 15 car owners are reportedly dealing with the aftermath of the vandalism, as CBS News Detroit pointed out. The chain of events has left community members like Ahmad Shabazz without other choice but to pay for repairs out-of-pocket. "I still have my car, which is a good thing. But you know, this is definitely a headache that I could have gone without — a financial headache, too," Shabazz told CBS News.
Detroit's 3rd Precinct police officers are investigating the matter, collecting reports, and analyzing footage from the Project Green Light cameras. "We're seeing a reduction overall. Again, we talked about a small percentage of individuals that often will commit multiple crimes. And it's our goal, and our strategy is to locate those individuals and hold them accountable," said DPD 3rd Precinct Commander Matthew Fulgenzi in a statement to CBS News. Residents like Andrew Nazzaro are shaken by the recurrent crimes, expressing a need for secure parking, and stating, "And I would gladly pay $50 a month more on my rent just for a secured parking space."
The frequent break-ins in the neighborhood have prompted calls for better security measures. While authorities urge the community to remain vigilant, those with any information on the vandalism incidents are encouraged to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP to help catch the perpetrator.
