A Phoenix Police officer found himself on the wrong side of the law Friday when he was arrested and slapped with federal charges for his alleged involvement in a child pornography ring. The officer, identified as 41-year-old, Alaa Robert Bartley of Gilbert, is accused of both receiving and possessing illicit images of minors.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Bartley’s indictment stems from communication between him and an adult woman on a social network platform between August 2020 and February 2022. During their exchanges, the two reportedly shared a mutual sexual interest in children, leading to the woman sending Bartley child sex abuse imagery.

The former Phoenix cop tried to mask his identity online with a fictitious name, but he couldn't hide his real-life role as a law enforcement officer, going as far as to share a photo of himself in uniform. Meanwhile, the woman involved in the case has been separately charged in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Walking through the labyrinthine corridors of justice, Bartley could face a long stint behind bars. A single count of Knowingly Receiving Child Pornography comes with a five-to-twenty-year prison sentence, up to a $250,000 fine, and the possibility of a lifetime of supervised release. Should the images be found to involve a prepubescent minor, a count of Knowingly Possessing Child Pornography could command a maximum twenty-year sentence—shedding stark light on the severity of the allegations against him.

While the charges paint a damning portrait, authorities underscore that a criminal complaint is not an admission of guilt, but a formal accusation. Bartley, like any defendant in this land, retains the presumption of innocence until—and unless—evidence confirms his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The weighty task of uncovering the truth now rests with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is conducting the probe into Bartley's activities, while prosecuting duties are held by the United States Attorney’s Office in Phoenix.
