In the pre-dawn calm of Plano, Texas, a high-speed pursuit unfolded as police apprehended a teenager behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. The Plano Police Department reported that Officer Smith spotted a vehicle previously reported stolen to the Dallas Police Department. The incident, which escalated into a chase, took place on Thursday, March 29, around 3:00 a.m. Officer Smith's attempt to pull over the driver, 17-year-old Edwin Martinez, led to Martinez fleeing and subsequently abandoning the car in the streets of Garland, according to the Plano Texas Police Department.
The ensuing search for Martinez was not without its dangers, intensifying when gunshots rang out from a wooded area. Officers Seed, Sadler, and Faiz, all from Plano, along with additional units from the neighboring Garland and Richardson Police Departments, had to seek immediate cover. The authorities formed a tight perimeter which, alongside the eye in the sky provided by the Texas DPS101 helicopter, cornered Martinez trying to hide along the treeline. It was under Plano Patrol Sergeant Thompkins' coordinated effort that the arrest was successfully made.
The search brought to light not just Martinez's attempt to evade arrest but also implicated a juvenile in the affair. This accomplice was later detained, and the department has since charged Martinez with Evading Arrest or Detention using a Vehicle.
