Monday morning's commute turned into a snarl for travelers heading to O'Hare International Airport as protestors brought traffic to a standstill. According to Chicago Sun-Times, activists blocked westbound Interstate 90, spilling over onto the Kennedy Expressway and leaving lanes usually congested with taxis and shuttles eerily empty.

O'Hare personnel warned of "substantial" traffic delays stemming from the demonstration. In a statement posted on X, travelers were advised to look for alternative transportation methods. "Vehicular travel into O'Hare may be substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity on I-190," the Airport's post elaborated. Despite the disruption, traffic began to creep forward again roughly around 9:20 a.m., as Illinois State Police and Chicago Police Department intervened to manage the scene, NBC Chicago reported.

Social media was flooded with images and videos showcasing the blockade's impact, featuring abandoned lanes near terminals teeming with foot traffic, as stranded travelers dragged luggage to their destination. It was an uncommon sight on a stretch of road that's typically bustling with vehicles.

By around 9:30 a.m., the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications announced some lanes were reopening, but warned of persistent backups. "Allow extra time if traveling to O’Hare this morning," the OEMC cautioned. However, delays continued to affect the area, with Total Traffic noting sustained backups along I-90.

The motive behind the protest, and the group responsible, remains unknown. Neither the NBC Chicago nor the Chicago Sun-Times had confirmed the identity or cause of the demonstrators at the time of reporting. As the disrupted commute inches towards normalcy, the story behind this unexpected gridlock stays untold, leaving travelers and city officials piecing together a Monday morning like no other.
