A gruesome act of animal cruelty has left a community in shock as a 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly throwing his own dog over a fence to be mauled to death. Xavier Rene Martinez now faces a charge of Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals after purportedly tossing the small dog into a yard where it was attacked by larger dogs, leading to its death.
According to a report by FOX San Antonio, a witness called the police, recounting how she saw a man, later identified as Martinez, throw his dog over a fence and then rapidly flee the scene when she tried to confront him. The witness observed the smaller dog being viciously attacked by the larger canines in the yard.
Responding officers discovered that the dog, named Shadow, belonged to Martinez, who, during an interview with the police, admitted to his actions. He claimed that the dog had bitten him, and he could not to bear the responsibility of raising it any longer. Martinez allegedly told police that he "decided to leave his dog at a house on San Gabriel," where he knew other dogs were present. He dropped the animal over the fence without confirming if someone was home to provide proper care.
The injured pet was quickly transported to an emergency vet by Animal Care Services (ACS) but ultimately succumbed to its injuries.
