A man was killed in a drive-by shooting after he had dropped his wife off at work. Jesus Mares Ortega, 61, was identified as the victim fatally shot in the head, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office.
Just before 5:15 a.m. on Monday, Ortega returned to his home in the 1600 block of West French Place, where he was confronted by a black sedan or SUV. As reported by KSAT, the assailants fired four shots in his direction, prompting Ortega to rush inside to warn his family of the danger. Despite their numbers not being injured, another man and his two kids were inside the residence when more shots were fired, and Ortega was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Police are said to be looking into two individuals believed to be in the suspect vehicle.
Detectives are exploring a possible link between this fatal shooting and several others in the area. Earlier that morning, police responded to multiple shooting calls in the vicinity that may be connected to Ortega's death. Fox San Antonio notes that only days prior, on Thursday, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the back while in his living room during a separate drive-by incident, a situation police are still working to untangle.
As the investigation unfolds, San Antonio police remain tight-lipped about potential motives or suspects in Ortega's murder. Community members are urged by authorities to come forward with any relevant information.
